Arthur R. Tatum

As Director of Design for FBT Architects and Principal of Soteria’s Environmental Design Division, Tatum has been creating award-winning schools and work places in the public and private sector for more than 30 years. Over the last decade he has seen the need and importance of using environmental design principals to create safer environments for his clients. Understanding how the built environment can affect human behavior, help reduce opportunities for crime, and improve the responses to them, he designs modern 21st Century environments with a focus on safety for it’s inhabitants. Implementing environmental design principles such as how and where a building is sited, entry and access points to the campus and buildings, ensuring line-of-sight inside and out, and creating opportunities for natural surveillance, all help to inform the final solution.

Always responding to the site and environment, Art brings to Soteria a design process that allow the goals and requirements of each project to evolve into a design solution that is unique to its location, and enhances the experience of its users. He encourages an integrated approach to design that merges function with aesthetics while ensuring a project is on budget.

Tatum is a current member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). He is a board member of NAIOP New Mexico.
